Name of Enzyme: Adenylate Cyclase

E.C # – 4.6.1.1

Adenylate cyclase also commonly known as Adenylyl cyclase is found mostly in the plasma membranes of mammals. It is an integral membrane-bound protein. Adenylate cyclase catalyzes the conversion of  ATP to cAMP which is a secondary messenger and is used to activate a series of other enzymes. Adenylate cyclase requires Mg 2+ in order to bind with ATP. Adenylate cyclase can be stimulated by a wide variety of hormones including epinephrine, glucagon or can also be stimulated by Ca 2+. Its active site and regulatory sites are formed as a result of dimerization of the enzyme’s 2 catalytic domains.
